One of the most common degenerative-dystrophic diseases today is arthrosis of the hip joint, also known as coxarthrosis.This disease can affect one or both joints, but these processes take place gradually.At the initial stage of the disease, one joint is affected, and a little later - the second.

Most often, patients over the age of 40-45 suffer from coxarthrosis, but this disease has many causes and, in principle, can occur among different age groups.Fortunately, arthrosis of the hip joint is not common in children.Congenital dysplasia of the hip joint leads to childhood coxarthrosis.This is due to the underdevelopment of the joint's bone tissue and ligaments.Children born with this condition often experience subluxation and dislocation of the hip, when the head of the femur comes out of its socket.
Description of the disease and its causes
The hip joint is located between the hip bone and the thigh bone.That is why the inflammation and pathology of the sacroiliac joints is called arthrosis of the hip joint.
The space between them includes the synovial membrane and hyaline cartilage, these components together ensure the normal functioning of the joint.All this is clearly visible in the photo of arthrosis of the hip joint.
The work of hyaline cartilage is similar to the work of a sponge.When it contracts, depending on the load on the joint, it releases the required amount of fluid, which acts as a lubricant.After the load is stopped, the pores of the cartilage are filled with fluid again.One of the reasons for the development of a disease such as hip arthrosis is a change in the properties of the synovial fluid.

In addition to the work of hyaline cartilage, the causes of arthrosis of the hip joint can also be the slowing down of joint metabolic processes, which occurs as a result of poor circulation.These processes lead to atrophy of the muscles surrounding the joint.These muscles perform a protective function for the joint during the normal functioning of all mechanisms and processes.They reduce the risk of injury in case of inattentive movements, falls or jumps.
Causes of the disease can be injuries, inflammatory processes and infections in the body, as well as congenital dislocations of the hip or congenital disorders of joint development (dysplasia).
Degrees and symptoms of arthrosis
There are four stages of this disease:
- Arthrosis of the hip joint 1st degree.At this stage of the disease, the patient feels some discomfort, which is especially pronounced after physical exertion and going down or up the stairs.The pain of the first degree of arthrosis of the hip joint can occur in both the hip and knee area.
- Arthrosis of the hip joint is 2 degrees.This stage of the disease is characterized by the manifestation of more intense pain.In addition to physical activity, pain can also occur when the foot is at rest;even lameness is possible when walking for a long time.The nature of the pain is pronounced, radiating to the groin, back or knees.The function of the joint is already impaired in the case of this degree of arthrosis.
- In the case of third-degree hip arthrosis, the pain is constant and does not go away even at night.The patient can only move with the help of orthopedic devices (stick or crutches).Movement of the joint is severely limited.
- Arthrosis of the hip joint of the 4th degree is expressed by large bony growths (visible on X-rays), severe pain, which is constantly increasing.This degree of arthrosis is also called expressed.The function of the joint is completely impaired, movement is limited or impossible.It can only be treated with surgery.
The symptoms of arthrosis of the hip joint vary depending on the degree of the disease:
- limping, reduced leg movement in the hip area;
- stiffness of movement both after exercise and at rest;
- atrophy of the thigh muscles and shortening of the affected limb.
The main symptom that calls for medical attention is pain.Timely travel to the hospital plays an important role here, since the majority of patients present with complaints during the active development of the second or even third stage of the disease.You should not wait until the pain becomes pronounced, as this is fraught with irreversible processes that may occur in the body.
Diagnosis of the disease
This disease requires a combined diagnosis.In the first stage, the doctor talks to the patient, determines pain complaints and other factors that cause anxiety.After that, the patient is examined to identify gait disturbances, the difference in the length of the healthy and diseased limb, and pain on palpation.In addition, they examine the sensitivity of the diseased areas to reduce it, and perform a procedure to determine the functions of the adjacent joints.Already at this stage of the diagnosis, the doctor can make a presumptive diagnosis: hip joint arthrosis in one or another stage.
After the interview and examination, the time for laboratory and instrumental tests:
- First of all, the patient is sent for an X-ray.Plain and axial X-rays give the doctor the opportunity to see an almost complete picture of the disease.
- If the X-ray is not enough, the patient is sent for magnetic resonance or computed tomography.
- The essence of laboratory research is, on the one hand, a blood test to identify inflammatory processes occurring in the body, and, on the other hand, the collection of synovial fluid by puncture.By using the latter, it can be observed whether the composition of the given fluid has changed, as these changes often cause the development of coxarthrosis.
Treatment of hip arthrosis
Treatment and diagnosis of coxarthrosis should be combined.There is an opinion that the only sure way to get rid of hip arthrosis is surgery.But often for a number of individual reasons, such as general health or advanced age, surgery is highly undesirable or impossible.In this case, coxarthrosis should be treated in a different way.Here, everything depends not only on the condition of the patient, but also on the stage of the disease.

First-degree arthrosis can be completely cured without surgery.Of course, this treatment is complex and requires a lot of effort, which the patient must do in order to recover.Many procedures for osteoarthritis of the hip include:
- drug treatment to relieve inflammation, reduce pain and improve metabolism in the joint area;
- the patient must regularly perform special exercises prescribed by the doctor;
- The diet of 1st degree arthrosis of the hip joint also plays an important role, since blood circulation and metabolic processes in the body and especially in the area of the hip joint depend on proper nutrition.
In the second stage of the disease, we cannot speak of a complete recovery, since deformation has already developed in the bones, however, with the help of certain procedures, surgery can be postponed for a longer time or completely avoided.Second-degree arthrosis of the hip joint, in addition to drug treatment with the same pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, exercises and a special diet, also requires hospitalization 1-2 times a year.

The third stage of arthrosis requires surgery.The joint tissue is severely depleted, the deformation in the joint area is irreversible, and there is probably no other way out.However, there are particularly persistent patients who, with incredible efforts and constant work on themselves, achieve significant improvement without surgical intervention.
Diet and folk remedies in the treatment of coxarthrosis
As mentioned above, diet is an important part of hip arthrosis treatment.The diet of patients with coxarthrosis should be balanced and contain all the necessary micronutrients.The basis of any tissue in the human body is protein, so you should eat dairy products and legumes, as well as jelly and not too fatty jellied meat.It is necessary to take into account the fact that the purpose of the diet is to saturate the body with essential microelements and lose weight.This is necessary to relieve the load on the joint.Based on this, you should reduce the consumption of fatty, salty and other high-calorie foods.
Treatment of arthrosis of the hip joint with folk remedies can relieve pain and reduce some of the adverse processes associated with the disease.However, any prescription of traditional medicine should be discussed with a doctor before use and should be used only with his approval.Here are some ways to treat coxarthrosis:
- Cut a cabbage leaf with a knife, smear it with honey, and wrap it in cellophane and a woolen bandage on the sore joint overnight.
- Rub the joint with tincture of celandine in olive oil.To make it, pour 7-8 tablespoons of plant stems with one liter of oil and let it stand for two weeks.
- Mix aloe juice with eucalyptus and mint leaves and apply this mixture to the painful joint several times a day.
- The treatment of arthrosis of the hip joint with salt is also widespread, as dry heat has a beneficial effect on the elimination of inflammation and pain.Pour the previously heated salt in a pan or oven into a bag made of thick material and apply it to the sore spot.
